EXECUTIVE ORDER BY THE GOVERNOR: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: ORDERED: ORDERED: The Special Council on Criminal Justice Reform, created by House Bill 1265 during the 2011 Legislative Session of the Georgia General Assembly, was successful in its study of the Georgia criminal justice system as well in its subsequent recommendations to the Joint Committee on Criminal Justice Reform; and The Joint—Committee drafted House Bill 1176 based on the recommendations of the Council; and House Bill 1176 passed both houses of the General Assembly unanimously and was signed into law on May 2nd of this year; and The measures implemented by House Bill 1176 are a significant first step in the criminal justice reform process, but more needs to be done to address the many facets of the criminal justice system in order to ensure public safety is maximized and incarceration is efficient; and The Special Council on Criminal Justice Reform’s codified term has expired. NOW, THEREFORE, BY VIRTUE OF THE POWER VESTED IN ME AS GOVERNOR OF THE STATE GEORGIA, IT IS HEREBY That the Special Council on Criminal Justice Reform be reassembled. The Council shall make recommendations to the Governor’s Office on areas of improvement in the criminal justice system. IT IS FURTHER That the Special Council on Criminal Justice Reform shall consist of members appointed by the Governor to serve at the pleasure of the Governor.
